adminWhen we sold our Class 5 mare Career Change empty in 2024 for $20k as a broodmare we were left wondering whether this was the right move. The market had dropped considerably and although the family was running hot with investment the timing just wasn’t right. As the broodmare sale loomed the Winter Carnival in Queensland was in full swing and the mare’s half-sister TIYE (By American Pharoah) was right on the mark to get the black type for the page. We already had the Gr3 winner ENGLISH RIVIERA ticking the box and a second stakes performed sibling would have meant the $$$ would follow. Unfortunately TIYE finished 4th in the Listed Bill Carter Stakes and couldn’t quite go on with it for the Gollan Racing team. The family lost its heat and we had no choice but to settle for unders with the injured Career Change who had no racing prospects.
The Inglis Digital Auction is so hot at the moment as the yearling sales take shape and owners start moving on horses that don’t fit their requirements. Our bloodstock team were left priced out for the traditional targets and we had to start thinking outside the box. Lot 137 was opened up on the screen and we couldn’t believe that we had another opportunity to gain access to the Second Time Lucky family that we knew so well. Second Time Lucky resides at Kingstar Farm and with a mating to Extreme Choice and a 2025 Magic’s yearling by Stay Inside fetching $140,000 we had to look at this closer.
We knew that the breeders would come again for this 3YO filly and in a hotly contested bidding war we were able to secure her for $45,000. Some would say she doesn’t have the form to ask for such a price however if we get a bit of luck with the pedigree there might be some residual after racing.
Clint was stoked to get her and has already penciled in the $50k Super Maiden (1100m) at Coonamble for the first up assignment on Champs Day. With the BOBS Bonus Eligibility this race could draw out almost $30k from Racing NSW and knock out a fair bit of the purchase price in just over a month. We know she has been schooled really well and with the Queensland metro form line it hasn’t taken long to prick a bit of interest.
