With the Magic Millions approaching with haste the pressure is on to show owners why you put your hard earned into owning 2YO thoroughbreds. Some people love the thrill of the debut run and others prefer the punt on tried stock that are placed well in our region. We have slowly built our ownership group hungry for 2YO precocity and Rod Scott is hammered with that word in the shopping season. The topic of conversation in the first day of the Magics is usually focused on budget and in our case a lack of it. The early types stand right out and come with hefty price tags so if you are in the mid-low range you are hoping for a bit of luck in the first 12 months regarding size and their mental aptitude. Rod attempts to limit our exposure to problems and thankfully he is a very good judge giving us the crucial advice that comes from decades of experience.
In 2024 we were forced to pull back the number of yearlings we bought instead utilising some good financial support to acquire two headline acts for the stable. One colt and one filly headed south from the Gold Coast and HELLO FAROE (By Hellbent) and the ANDERS x YOU ARE GOLDEN Filly are now getting ready for the early 2YO trials. It’s a day by day proposition with these young horses and Clint is always optimistic and lets the horse decide whether they have the constitution to handle the early pressure. If you can execute the plan that begins almost 12 months earlier and have high quality juveniles than the reward is there both on and off the race track.
At this stage of their race preparations both are progressing as hoped and will target the Wellington trials on Sunday the 17th November. Whatever the result there will always be a plan B and the horses welfare will always be prioritised before the dreams of owners having a Magic Millions runner. Those who have endured the years trying to find a top class 2YO can attest that it’s extremely hard and the statistics are against those who try. However with the glamour, hype and wealth that surrounds the first racing season there will always be trainers trying to acquire their stakes winning 2YO in turn setting them up for many years to come.
